My Favorite Snack Pairings
I am such a snacker. Whether it's working a long shift at my summer job, running between classes across campus, or squeezing in a bite before teaching, I always manage to be on the go. What I learned from working with a nutritionist is that snacking is a healthy practice, but it's best when it's purposeful.
The goal of a snack is to satisfy your hunger and keep your body going in between meals. When things get busy, that's exactly what I need. A purposeful snack combines protein and carbohydrates (carbs) to provide you with energy. Here are some of my favorites...
Greek Yogurt & Granola
If you haven't switched to Greek yogurt yet, this is something you'll want to try! Greek yogurt is high in protein, and as a vegetarian I have to be conscious about getting it into my diet. Often times I've heard others complain that it's bitter or too thick for their liking, so if you're looking for something that tastes and feels a little more like classic yogurt, I'd recommend my favorite: Dannon's Light and Fit Vanilla Greek Yogurt (or another sweet flavor)!
Hummus & Pretzels
This one's a classic! Pretzels satisfy my salt craving during the day, and hummus fills me up and keeps me going with my busy schedule. There are many different kinds of hummus to try, my favorite being the classic Sabra brand. They even sell little snack packs, too!
Cheese & Crackers
This snack is more than just your go-to to munch on at a fancy event. It might seem a little basic, but my nutritionist taught me that purposeful snacking can be as simple as cheese and crackers! Personally, I've always been a fan of Wheat Thins and Cracker Barrel Cheese.
Nutella Toast
Any other Nutella fans here? At one point in college, I used to carry around a jar and a spoon in my backpack at all times! Nutella on whole-wheat toast is a morning favorite of mine. If I'm really feeling fancy, I'll throw some banana slices on it too.
What are your favorite snack pairings? I'd love to hear from you as I plan out my snacks and meals for my upcoming semester of teaching!
